Role of Extra Curricular Activities for Children

As the proverb goes, "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy," Sesame Workshop in India believes the importance of extra-curricular activities in a child's life. Making these extra-curricular activities educational and fun is Sesame Workshop's forte.

Educating a child with the basics which will foster him/her just for school is not enough. Exploring their capabilities and enhancing them is very important. Encouraging one's physical, creative and social interests is necessary. Engaging in extra-curricular activities help in building a child's friend circle too. Children meet different children and get a chance to learn from each other about what lies outside their own family circles. Sesame Workshop in India has a TV show (Galli Galli Sim Sim), fun games (online and offline), pre-schools, so on and so forth, to inculcate in a child all the basic needs to prepare him/her for life.

Extra-curricular activities help build a child's abilities. Roleplaying as teachers, entertainers, doctors or presidents induces the ability to think far-fetched about what he/she wants to procure out of his/her life. Every individual is interested in exploring new things in life. It is the childhood where they are carefree and engage in different curricular activities. They think they are just playing games but unconsciously they are engaging in activities that are actually important for their overall growth. They get an opportunity to develop their skills. When they are engaged in extracurricular activities with the others, they learn the way team work works and learn to share and compensate at times. Extracurricular activities clears a child's mental and physical constrains.

They should never be over-scheduled or over burdened with homework. Overburdening them with too much of homework can perplex them. Hence, extra-curriculum helps a child to become aware of their surroundings and they learn acceptance. Most of the parents think that extra-curricular activities will hamper their grades and sequester them from the activities. Very little to their knowledge they know that it is the extra-curricular that helps them become ready for life as a whole. Sesame Workshop believes truly that education should not be constrained just in a classwork/homework schedule. Education comes in various forms. It's not always what you teach a child, what's more important is 'how' you teach him/her. The goal is always important, agreed, but the path we choose to attain that goal is where the importance lies.
