Fans Broke The Guinness World Record For Loudest Crowd Cheer at a Sports Stadium

As a regular activity, NIST Institute, a leading course provider for numerous world renowned safety courses in India and the Middle Eastern countries, reviews happenings occurring around the world that could impact health and safety, in line with its motto "we contribute to safety". The review of one such happening is given below:

On Sunday the 13th Oct 2013 in the USA, fans of professional American football team Kansas City Chiefs broke the Guinness World Record for "Loudest Crowd Cheer at a Sports Stadium," in Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City, Missouri sustaining a din of 137.5 decibels. It could have been a painful exercise for even the most faithful fans Kansas City Chiefs. Noises exceeding 85 decibels can cause permanent hearing loss and tinnitus.

As a leader in hearing conservation, 3M, American multinational conglomerate corporation based in St. Paul, Minnesota stepped in to provide 36,000 Sets of Earplugs free to help fans protect from hearing Loss. To help prevent permanent hearing loss, 3M encouraged fans to wear hearing protection during all loud events at work, at home and in the public. Fans were also encouraged to download 3M's free hearing conservation mobile app, which includes a 3M™ SoundPro™ Sound Level Meter to measure the decibels during the game.

The crowd in Arrowhead Stadium exceeded the previous record of 136.6 decibels set by Seattle Seahawks fans September 15, 2013. Players told the Associated Press it became difficult to communicate with each other during the fourth quarter.

To understand how loud is too loud, let us see some examples: Quietest sound heard by person with normal healthy hearing 0 dBA, Attending a football game (100 to 120 dBA), Using a leaf blower or chainsaw (95-120 dBA), Riding a motorcycle (80-110 dBA), Using a lawn mower (82-103 dBA), Attending a rock concert (90-120 dBA), Listening to a personal music player (75-114 dBA), Shooting firearms (140 to 165 dBA), Watching a movie at the theater (72-104 dBA).

Noise-induced hearing loss can result from a one-time exposure to a very loud sound (at or above 120 decibels), blast, impulse, or by listening to loud sounds (at or above 85 decibels) over an extended period. The louder the sound, the shorter the time period before hearing damage occurs. Hearing 120 dBA sound beyond 9 seconds is hazardous and if the intensity of the sound is 140 dBA or more, immediate hearing damage is possible.

One study claims noise as the cause of approximately half of all cases of hearing loss and that noise causes some degree of problems in 5% of the population globally.

The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA, 2006) recognizes that noise-related hearing loss is the most common professional disease seen in Europe.

Studies carried out in the United States (Agrawall et al. 2009) and New Zealand (Thorne et al. 2008) show that noise-related hearing loss is one of the most widely spread professional illnesses in those countries.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), hearing loss is the most prevalent sensory disability globally.

Controls suggested by NIST Institute:

NIHL (Noise Induced Hearing Loss) is 100 percent preventable. A good rule of thumb is to avoid noises that are "too loud" and "too close" or that last "too long."Spread awareness of the hazards of noise to family, friends, and colleagues. All individuals should understand that noises that are at or above 85 decibels can cause damageBe alert to hazardous noise in the environment and use hearing protectors such as earplugs or earmuffs.Considering several damage risk criteria, use of double hearing protection is recommended whenever impulses exceed 140 dB SPL. A combination of an electronic level-limiting earmuff and a passive earplug is recommended to improve the communication when using dual protection.Protect the ears of children who are too young to protect their own.If you suspect hearing loss, or exposed to intolerable level of noise, get yourself medically tested for NIHL.

Proper training and awareness programs on the consequences of noise hazard would have deterred many from taking part in events such as Guinness World Record for "Loudest Crowd Cheer" in Arrowhead Stadium. Many people are unaware of the harms caused by noise at damaging levels/duration.

Training plays a crucial role in health and safety. There are globally recognized safety training courses which cover this subject. Highly esteemed institutions such as NEBOSH, IOSH, CIEH provide safety courses through their course provider NIST Institute. The learners learn to identify hazards, carry out risk assessments and implement effective controls. The courses include NEBOSH IGC (International General Certificate) and NEBOSH IDip (International Diploma). For more information about the courses please visit http://www.nistinstitute.com.

NIST Institute also provides other course such as IOSH MS, IOSH WS, CIEH - Fire Safety, CIEH - Risk Assessment, CIEH - First Aid Course. In addition, NIST Institute conducts IRCA (UK) approved and internationally recognized regular Lead Auditor courses for BS OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS) in association with BUREAU VERITAS, a global leader in conformity assessment and certification services. NIST has extended its operations to Russia and South Asian countries.
